In his speech during the ceremonial turnover of 3,000 pistols to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Tuesday, Duterte made public his plan to issue a decree encouraging the display of pictures of Philippines Heroes in lieu of public officials photo.
In the Philippine government offices and schools, the display of pictures from President to the highest ranking government official in the locality has been part of the practice and it has been observed there for so many decades.
But Duterte finds it’s awkward and self-serving, saying he would rather encourage the display of Philippines heroes than public officials.
“I intend to issue a decree. Ipatanggal ko ‘yung mga litrato namin. Lalo na ‘yang litrato ni… Tapos litrato, pagpasok niya, litrato niya. Na-buang man ‘yung mga ganon na tao,” he said.
(I intend to issue a decree, I want our pictures removed, especially the picture of…then picture of…when you enter, it’s the picture. that’s crazy, there are people like that)
Duterte, who has mandated government officials to keep a low profile, said that photos of past and present government officials should be hanged in the privacy of their respective home.
For those who want to display their pictures, Duetrte suggestes “Doon mo ilagay ‘yan sa mga pamilya ninyo, doon sa sala. Pati ‘yung akin. Sa Davao (Put in in your your family portrait, in the living room, include mine).
When Duterte was the City Mayor here, he prohibited the display of his picture in offices and schools but instead asked them to display instead the pictures of national heroes.
Displaying the picture of Philippine heroes will inculcate love of country among children, he emphasized.
However, the chief executive did not set deadline to take off the pictures of public officials displayed in government offices.-Editha Z. Caduaya/Newsline.ph
