DAVAO CITY – Engr. Leonard Carlo Paquit, a dedicated Electrical Engineering graduate from the University of the Southeastern Philippines, has been an integral part of AboitizPower’s subsidiary, Davao Light and Power Co., Inc., for nearly a decade. His journey and commitment to his work – and to his family – highlight the importance of achieving a work-life balance.

Carlo’s journey with Davao Light began in 2013 when he joined the Substation Maintenance section under the Substation and Electrical Equipment Department (SEED).

Substations play a crucial role in converting electricity into different voltages needed for homes, businesses, and buildings. The maintenance of substations ensures the smooth operation of distribution systems, minimizing unplanned outages and increasing customer satisfaction.

In 2016, Carlo transitioned to the Protective Relay section of the company. Recalling a significant experience, he mentioned the shutdown of one of their largest substations during a holiday. This incident made him realize the demands of his career, requiring him to work on rest days and even during the hours when most people are asleep.

The pressure in engineering operations is considerable, as delays can result in extended power outages. Carlo emphasized the need for reliable first-line protection in substations to prevent equipment damage. Repairing or replacing substation equipment is time-consuming and costly, affecting both customers and the company. Therefore, preventive measures play a crucial role in maintaining a reliable power supply.

When asked about his choice to pursue Electrical Engineering, Carlo credited his father, a Mechanical Engineer, and his siblings, who studied Computer Technology and Computer Science, for inspiring him. He explained that the engineering field offered a sense of responsibility and a vibrant culture that suited his personality. Furthermore, he sought to carve his own path distinct from his father and siblings.

As a father to a three-year-old daughter, Carlo values the importance of work-life balance. He no longer checks work emails after coming home and keeps a separate cellphone for work-related matters. Carlo believes that life is about more than just work; it’s about creating meaningful experiences. He ensures he is present for his daughter’s milestones and cherishes moments like her nursery school’s moving-up ceremony.

Recently assigned to the System Operations Department under the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) section, Carlo is eager to learn and collaborate with his new colleagues. The SCADA system enables remote data collection and processing from different franchise areas, enhancing communication and reducing power outage durations.

Despite being with SEED for over nine years, Carlo embraces the opportunity to adapt to a new environment and contribute as a new team member. He envisions improving existing processes and fostering a positive work culture.

Outside of work, Carlo enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and trail running, showcasing his adventurous side.

“Since I’ve been with SEED for more than nine years, I have to adapt to a new environment and culture. However, I have been dealing with the same people since I started in Davao Light, and I can see that I can improve some of the processes here as a new team member,” Carlo shared.

When asked about what he wants other people to remember him by, Carlo says he wants to be someone fun to be with. Carlo loves to hike and run trails during his free time. (Davao Light)
