Ex-Basilan Mayor, two others killed en route to attend daughter’s graduation

DAVAO CITY –— Rose Furigay, the former Lamitan City, Basilan province and wife of Mayor Mayor Oric Furigay was killed while en route to attend her daughter Hanna Rose’ graduation at the Ateneo de Manila University Law school at around 2:55 in the afternoon Sunday, July 24.

PBGen. Remus Medina, director of Quezon City Police district said the incident happened at Gate 3, C5, Katipunan Ave. in Quezon City, he identified the victims as

  1. Former Lamitan mayor Rose Furigay
  2. Jeneven Bandiola – ADMU security
  3. Victor George Capistrano – Furigay’s aide

Photos circulating show, Furigay’ car was entering the ADMU building when the incident happened.

Furigay’s daughter Hanna Rose is still confined at the hospital.

Medina identified the suspect as Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, 38, a resident of Basilan, During the investigation Yumol said the victims had filed cyber libel cases against him sometime in 2019, when Furigay was still serving as mayor of said town.

Medina said, Yumol was able to commander a vehicle after the crime but he was caught by the barangay volunteers and the police.

Furigay served as mayor of Lamitan for three consecutive term.

Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo who was on his way to the graduation was advised not proceed due to the incident.

The management of the ADMU cancelled the graduation ceremony.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. condoled with the families of the victims.

On its Facebook Page, the City Government of Lamitan stated “The Local Government of Lamitan is saddened by the untimely death of our Beloved former Mayor Rose U. Furigay and LGU employee Mr Victor B. Capistrano. “
