Zamboanga City, Philippines — Five armed men were killed  while the government forces suffered two casualties in a four-hour fight between the Naval Forces Western Mindanao early morning Thursday, August 10  at vicinity of Sitio Langhub, Brgy Pang, Kalingalan Caluang, Sulu.
The firefight resulted to the death of two navy officers namely;  SSgt Pedro H Butic Jr PN (M) and Cpl Bryan V Santos PN (M)  and wounded Cpl Renier G Catalan PN (M).
Catalan was immediately airlifted to to Zamboanga City for proper medical treatment.
The government forces  led by Col. Antonio Rosario of the Philippine  Navy  were operating a Fleet-Marine operations in the area together with  Marine Battalion Landing Team 3 (MBLT3) led by Lt. Col. Espinosa PN (M) when the encounter transpired.
The  four-hour fight resulted to the death of five fully armed individuals while six others were arrested.
Recovered from their possession were seven assorted high powered firearms which include 1 Cal. 50 Sniper rifle, 2 M16 rifle, 1 M1 Garand rifle, 1 M14 rifle, 1 KG9, 1 shot gun; and war materials and documents.
Despite its heavy involvement in the Marawi City siege, the Commander of Naval Forces Western Mindanao, Rear Adm. Rene V. Medina AFP, assures that Fleet-Marine Forces will continue to exercise vigilance in the ZAMBASULTA area to protect its people from those who threaten the peace, stability and development of Western Mindanao.-Richard G.
