BANAYBANAY, DAVAO ORIENTAL-— When everyone worries about food to survive during the Coronavirus pandemic, rice farmers here enjoyed a bountiful harvest, said Mayor Ada Caballero Lopez.

“Farmers here did not feel the impact of food problem, because they have sufficient to feed their family, and the harvest season is still ongoing and their production is high,” Lopez added.

Banaybanay is known for producing the quality ‘Banaybanay Rice’ and has remained food sufficient as well as economically stable.

Last May, during cropping season, the rural farmers enjoyed their harvest.

The Mayor said, the production was the same as reflected in the rice index of the town and people were busy tilling the soil while the Region was under the Enhanced Community Quarantine until it was relaxed to a Modified General Community Quarantine because they need to attend to their farms which is very far apart from houses.

“They were so happy with the government ration and many of those who received cash assistance through the Social Amelioration Program (SAP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) used their money to buy farm implements and other seeds to boost their income during the pandemic,” Lopez emphasized.

Every house received goods and food stuff from the municipal government and from the provincial government.

The 13,477 households were equally given the ration and everyone is happy.-Editha Z. Caduaya
