Kavurunan festival showcases diverse culture of North Cotabato

DAVAO CITY — The indigenous peoples from the 17 municipalities of North Cotabato showcased their colourful culture and history during the recently concluded Kavunuran Festival 2019, held at the provincial capitol grounds in Barangay Amas.

“Kavurunan” is an Aromen-Menuvu term for gathering of people from different communities.

About 500 delegates from the Aromanen-Menuvu, Libunganen, Obo Manobo, Tagabawa, B’laan and Tinananon communities joined the festivity on August 26-27, which depicted the beauty, culture and rich history of their roots.

During the tribal parade, each delegation showcased their tribal costumes and dances depicting their rich culture and tradition.

The Kavurunan festival preludes this year’s Kalivungan Festival which is set on September 1.

The Kalivungan is among the highlight activity of the 105th Founding Anniversary of the province.

Acting Vice Governor Shirlyn Macasarte-Villanueva, the overall chair of the Kalivungan, said “The ‘Kavurunan’ ended with various IP activities highlighting the occasion, the festival aims to promote the diverse culture, rituals, and practices of different IP tribes and their role in the history of Cotabato province.”

Obo Manobo representative Precious Anne R. Corpus from Kidapawan City was crowned Mutya ng Kavurunan 2019.  She also bagged the awards for Best in Tribal Attire, Best in Malong Attire, Best in Production Number, and Best in Question and Answer Portion.

The activity also featured tribal games and cultural competitions such as traditional dance, family ensemble, solo voice/uwahing, and musical instrument playing.-cacs/NewsLine.ph
