Magnitude 5.2 quake hits Davao Oriental

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit Davao Oriental on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In a bulletin issued at 10:29 a.m., Phivolcs said the tectonic quake struck 43 km. southeast of the municipality of Governor Generoso at 8:57 a.m.

It was 39 km. deep.

Intensity IV was felt in Malita and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Governor Generoso, and San Isidro, Davao Oriental, while intensity III was felt in Compostela, Davao de Oro; City of Digos and Hagonoy, Davao del Sur; Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; and Glan and Malungon, Darangani Tupi, South Cotabato.

Intensity II was reported in Maragusan and Mawab, Davao de Oro; City of Tagum, Davao del Norte; Kiblawan and Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; City of Mati and Tarragona, Davao Oriental; Arakan and City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; Alabel and Malapatan, Sarangani; Tampakan, South Cotabato; and Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity I was also reported in the City of Gingoog, Misamis Oriental; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; City of Koronadal and Polomolok, South Cotabato; and City of General Santos.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, logged the following instrumental intensities using the intensity meter that measures ground acceleration:

Intensity III: Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Pikit, Cotabato; and Malungon, Sarangani;

Intensity II: City of Gingoog, Misamis Oriental; Matanao, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; Kiamba, Sarangani; City of Koronadal and Tampakan, South Cotabato; and City of General Santos;

Intensity I: Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Alamada and Magpet, Cotabato; Malapatan, Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat; and City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

Damage is not expected, but aftershocks are possible from the magnitude 5.2 earthquake, Phivolcs said.-PNA
