Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts DavOcc

MANILA – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook Davao Occidental Friday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 19 km. northwest of Sarangani at about 6:22 p.m. It had a depth of 33 km.

Intensity IV was felt in Glan, Alabel, Kiamba, Maasim, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani province; General Santos City; Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, Malita, and Sarangani, Davao Occidental; and Polomolok, South Cotabato.

Intensity III, on the other hand, was reported in Banga, Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, Tampakan, and Tupi, South Cotabato; and Bagumbayan, Kalamansig, and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity II was reported in Davao City; Norala, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tantangan, and T’boli, South Cotabato; Kidapawan City, Kabacan, and Makilala, Cotabato; Isulan and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat; and Digos City, Matanao, and Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, while Intensity I was felt in Zamboanga City; Lambayong and Sen. Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat; and M’lang, Cotabato.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, recorded the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity IV – General Santos City; Malungon and Kiamba, Sarangani
Intensity III – Kidapawan City; Koronadal City
Intensity II – Davao City
Intensity I – Zamboanga City

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are likely but no damage is expected from the magnitude 5.7 tremor.

Damage starts at Intensity VI, based on Phivolcs’ scale.
