DAVAO CITY  (December 2) – Mindanao is strengthening its digital ties with Qatar as both sides advance talks on innovation, tech talent development, and ICT investments — a partnership seen as key to boosting the island’s digital transformation and opening new opportunities for communities.

MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno said his meeting with Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) highlighted Mindanao’s readiness to build a stronger innovation ecosystem. The dialogue formed part of the three-day Mindanao Investment Mission to Qatar, which spotlighted opportunities in ICT, digital skills training, and technology-driven growth.

Magno said the collaboration aligns with Qatar’s shift to a knowledge-based economy and the Philippines’ push to modernize government services, expand digital jobs, and equip Filipinos — especially Mindanao youth — for an AI-enabled future.

“These synergies are essential to building a better Mindanao — one that is digitally empowered and more competitive,” Magno said.

What the partnership could mean for Mindanao communities

Both parties signaled strong interest in cooperation on ICT investments, research, tech transfer, and cross-border startup collaboration, allowing Filipino and Qatari innovators to co-develop solutions in digital governance, agriculture tech, AI applications, cybersecurity, and smart city systems.

For Mindanao, this could translate into:

  • more digital upskilling programs for students and workers
  • stronger support for local startups
  • new innovation centers and ICT hubs
  • better access to smart technologies for local governments

Qatar — recognized globally for its advancements in AI, cybersecurity, and smart city innovation — has expressed readiness to partner with Mindanao institutions, LGUs, and industries on specific projects.

Magno emphasized that the initiative supports President Marcos Jr.’s priority to strengthen the country’s digital workforce and enhance AI readiness.

“These efforts offer meaningful opportunities for institutions and communities across Mindanao as they work to build digital skills and integrate innovation into local development,” he added.

As Mindanao positions itself in the global digital economy, the MinDA–Qatar alliance signals a push not only for investment but also for broader access to technology that can uplift communities and create future-ready jobs across the island.
