KORONADAL CITY, Philippines —The five-day  competition dubbed as  2018 SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) peacefully ended having more than 6,000 participants and delegates.

The athletic competition started Saturday, February 17, inside the four-hectare South Cotabato Sports Complex.

Arturo Bayucot, regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd) in SOCCSKSARGEN region, said the athletic competition did not only show the capabilities and skills of the student competitors but it promoted unity among students through sports.

“We can’t only produce medals ngunit mahalaga pa rin na matutunan ng mga manlalaro ang values of sports, sportsmanship, camaraderie, perseverance at determination upang matupad nila ang kanilang mga pangarap sa buhay,” Bayucot added.

Atty. Revsee Escobido, assistant secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), opened this year’s weeklong annual student sports competition with an appeal to the athletes.

Escobido thanked the DepEd officials in SOCCSKSARGEN region for the peaceful conduct of the event.

The annual sports event is sponsored by the DepEd and the provincial government of South Cotabato.

Alex Floro, DepEd South Cotabato sports coordinator, said aside from the regular events, five new sports events were added this year.

“These are the wushu, wrestling, dance sports, boxing (elementary level) and billiards.” Floro said.

The weeklong sports competition was secured by the various units of the Philippine National Police (PNP), troops from the Army’s 27th Infantry Battalion (IB) and force multipliers from the barangay peacekeeping teams. -Ramil H. Bajo/Newsline.ph
