OROQUIETA CITY — Misamis Occidental has earned the prestigious Gawad Kalasag Seal of Excellence for achieving full compliance with disaster risk management standards.

The recognition was awarded by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) during the 24th Gawad Kalasag Awards held in Cagayan de Oro City.

Vice Governor Rowena Gutierrez accepted the award on behalf of Governor Henry S. Oaminal, who could not attend the ceremony.

The award is a testament of the province’s unwavering commitment to disaster risk reduction, effective preparedness strategies, and ensuring the safety and resilience of its communities.

The Gawad Kalasag Seal of Excellence is awarded to local government units (LGUs) that excel in implementing comprehensive disaster risk management initiatives.

The recognition reflects the proactive measures of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), which has focused on mitigating the impacts of natural disasters, enhancing preparedness, and strengthening response capabilities.

Governor Oaminal commended the dedication of the PDRRMO and the collaborative efforts of the provincial team.

“This award represents the collective dedication of our PDRRMO and the entire team in ensuring the safety and resilience of Misamis Occidental. We remain committed to building a disaster-prepared and resilient community for our people,” Oaminal stated.

The Gawad Kalasag Awards serve as a benchmark for excellence in disaster risk management across the Philippines.

These awards not only honor exceptional practices but also aim to inspire other LGUs to improve their disaster response systems in light of increasingly frequent and severe natural hazards.

Misamis Occidental’s recognition solidifies its reputation as a leader in disaster preparedness, setting a standard for other provinces in safeguarding communities from the devastating effects of natural disasters.
