Misamis Occidental Welcomes Tourists: Senator Marcos Promotes the Province’s Hidden Gems

November 10, 2024 by Editha Z. Caduaya

OROQUIETA CITY – “Misamis is now open for business,” declared Senator Imee Marcos on Saturday, encouraging a renewed focus on promoting the province’s tourism potential. Senator Marcos, the guest of honor at this year’s 3rd Grand Perangat Festival, emphasized the need for a robust marketing campaign to showcase the natural beauty and attractions of Misamis Occidental.

Senator Marcos, alongside Governor Henry Oaminal, highlighted the province’s tourism destinations, describing them as “beautiful and full of potential.” They emphasized the importance of creating comprehensive tourism packages, including convenient transportation, to attract visitors from across the country.

However, Senator Marcos expressed concerns about how negative media coverage often shapes the perception of Mindanao. “In Manila, they think Mindanao is in constant turmoil, but they don’t realize that there are actually more crimes like theft and home robberies in Manila,” she noted. “It’s time to change the narrative and show what Mindanao has to offer.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., during a Cabinet meeting on July 12, also outlined plans to enhance tourism infrastructure across the country. He emphasized the need to develop world-class tourism facilities and proactive policies, aiming to make Philippine tourist destinations as competitive as those in Singapore.

Since Governor Oaminal took office in 2019, Misamis Occidental has made remarkable progress in infrastructure, connecting nearly all communities through cemented roads, which has greatly improved accessibility to tourist spots.

Among Misamis Occidental’s most notable attractions is the Asenso Global Garden (AGG) in Tangub City, perched on the slopes of Mount Malindang. From AGG, visitors enjoy sweeping views of Misamis Occidental and even parts of Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental.

The province is also preparing for the completion of the Asenso Misamis Occidental Aqua-Marine Park, an ambitious over-a-billion-peso project dubbed by Oaminal as the “Maldives of Mindanao.” This marine park, set against the backdrop of pristine waters and lush landscapes, is anticipated to be a major draw for both local and international tourists.

Misamis Occidental’s municipalities offer a range of natural and historical attractions. In Jimenez, the St. John the Baptist Church, a two-century-old heritage site, showcases colonial architecture and rich history. Sapang Dalaga is home to crystal-clear flowing springs, providing a tranquil retreat for nature lovers. Cotta Shrine in Ozamiz City is another landmark that draws visitors for its historical significance and picturesque surroundings.

With its diverse attractions, scenic landscapes, and improved accessibility, Misamis Occidental is positioning itself as a top tourist destination in Mindanao, poised to welcome travelers looking to experience the region’s unique culture and natural beauty.
