Over 200 Vinta’s compete in Regatta de Zamboanga

DAVAO CITY –— Over 200 colorful vintas sailed along the coast of Zamboanga City on Sunday to compete in this year’s Regatta de Zamboanga as part of the 8th Hermosa Festival.

A total of 235 vintas operated by fisherfolks joined the contest. The colorful vintas (boats) bring color to the shores which kicked off along R.T. Lim Boulevard,

Vinta is one of the icons of Zamboanga City. It reflects the colorful communities of the indigenous people in the Zamboanga Peninsula. It plays an important role in the culture and history of the indigenous communities.

The regatta is one of of the much-awaited maritime competition in Mindanao.

Residents recalled that the regatta was considered just an ordinary event among fisherfolks to honor the city’s Patron Saint, Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar.

Mayor John Dalipe officially opened the rase with hundreds of residents watching the competition.

Zamboanga City is dubbed as Asia’s Latin City because residents speak Chavacano or “Broken Spanish”. History revealed that Zamboanga was one of the bases of the Spanish army when they invaded the country several decades back.

Hundreds of residents along with Second District Representative and Majority Leader Mannix Dalipe, former Zamboanga Mayor Manny Dalipe, Vice Mayor Pinpin Pareja, PRO-9 Director BGen. Bowen Joey Masauding, Zamboanga Police Director PCol. Alexander Lorenzo, Councilors Vino Guingona, Joel Esteban, and Jihan Edding, witnessed the colorful event.
