DAVAO CITY – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s (PBBM) visit to Davao del Norte on Saturday was more than just a political event; it was a poignant reminder of the deep-rooted friendship between his late father, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and the province’s key political leaders.
This historic bond, founded on mutual respect and collaboration, continues to influence the region’s political landscape today.
Although the visit was officially part of the administration’s Mindanao campaign, it showcased the enduring ties between the Marcos family and influential political figures in Davao del Norte.
For over four decades, the political direction of the province has been shaped by the del Rosario and Floirendo – Lagdameo families.
Rodolfo del Rosario and the late Don Antonio Floirendo were renowned as political kingmakers, and their support was pivotal in the rise of numerous local and national leaders.
The rally in Carmen town on Saturday was perceived by some as a demonstration of Marcos Jr.’s ability to connect with what many consider “Duterte country.” However, the event transcended mere political maneuvering—it became a celebration of friendship, unity, and democracy.
“Davao del Norte’s rich historical past is always worth looking back on—how the province thrived during the golden years of the banana industry and how the present administration continues to support our people. Politics has always been there since I was born. Friendship has been nurtured and never compromised. Development is spreading, and the people are reaping the benefits,” said Secretary Anton Lagdameo, Special Assistant to the President.
Secretary Lagdameo also highlighted the significance of the event, describing it as a healthy exercise in democracy. “It was a display of how democracy works, how decade-long friendships have been rekindled with the people,” he explained. “It was a demonstration of how people have the right to move and express their sentiments. I wouldn’t call it a show of force,” he added.
Critics of the administration, however, suggested that the large turnout at the rally might have been incentivized by financial rewards. “Niadto ko, kay gusto ko makakita ni Bongbong (I went there because I wanted to see Bongbong). I don’t know if there was money given, because I didn’t receive anything,” said Dolores, a resident of Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte.
Political rallies in the region have often been associated with rumors of monetary incentives for attendees, though many participants insist they join out of genuine support for the candidate. “I was never forced to join,” locals often say, with some viewing any money they might receive as a modest gesture of appreciation for their time and attendance.
Saturday’s rally served as a reminder not only of the enduring friendships between political families in the region but also of the deep connection that President Marcos continues to share with the people of Davao del Norte.
The alliances forged between the Marcoses and the Floirendos remain a cornerstone of the province’s political identity—a lasting symbol of a relationship that has withstood the test of time.
