MANILA (April 26) – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. announced that adjustments will be implemented to strengthen the protection of police officers following the death of a cop during an anti-illegal drugs operation in Bacolod City on April 9.

M/Sgt. Romulo Galvez Jr. was fatally shot by a drug suspect during a buy-bust operation in Barangay Singcang Airport. He had served the PNP for 18 years and was laid to rest at Forest Lake Memorial Park in Barangay Sum-ag.

Nartatez said lessons from the incident will be applied nationwide, with improvements in backup, equipment, and coordination, emphasizing that the safety of personnel is “non-negotiable.”

He added that Galvez’s sacrifice strengthens the PNP’s commitment to its mission, carried out with greater discipline, unity, and care for officers on the ground.

Nartatez, along with Jonvic Remulla, visited Galvez’s wake in Bago City and assured the family of continued support, saying they will not be abandoned.
