DAVAO CITY (July 18) – Seven barangays on Nonoc Island in Surigao City were left without electricity Friday afternoon after strong winds from Tropical Storm (TS) Crising toppled a transmission tower connecting the island to mainland Mindanao.

In an advisory, the Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative (SURNECO) reported that the C8 Structure tower sustained significant damage due to gusty winds and heavy rains brought by the tropical storm, which continues to affect Surigao City and nearby areas.

Nonoc Island, situated between Surigao City and Dinagat Islands province, bore the brunt of the outage. The affected barangays include Aurora, Zaragoza, Lisondra, San Pedro, Cantiasay, Nonoc, and Talisay.

“Due to the prevailing unfavorable weather conditions, there will be delays in our operations to repair the tower, in consideration of the safety of our technical crew,” SURNECO stated.

The power cooperative assured residents that restoration work will commence as soon as weather conditions permit. Tropical Storm Crising has brought widespread rains and strong winds across northeastern Mindanao, prompting precautionary measures from local authorities.-With report from Alex Lopez
