MANILA (September 15) — The Senate on Monday approved on third and final reading a bill extending the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five years and moving the next local village elections to November 2028.
Senate Bill 2387 was approved with 13 senators voting in favor and five against.
The measure would increase the term of barangay and SK officials from four to five years and move the elections from the first Monday of November 2026 to the first Monday of November 2028, with succeeding elections held every five years.
Voting against the bill were Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III and Senators Francis Pangilinan, Joel Villanueva, Bam Aquino and Risa Hontiveros.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
If enacted, the measure would postpone the scheduled 2026 Barangay and SK Elections and establish a five-year election cycle for village and youth officials.
