DAVAO CITY — The students, residents, and teachers of Sangab National High School are grieving the loss of their Teachers’ Dormitory, which was tragically consumed by fire earlier today, October 19, 2024.

Located in Sitio Sangab, Barangay Pichon, in the municipality of Caraga, Davao Oriental, the dormitory served as a crucial refuge for educators assigned to this remote region. It provided essential housing for teachers who traveled from various parts of Davao Oriental to support the local educational community.

The fire reportedly ignited rapidly spreading and engulfing the building. residents tried to put off the fire using buckets but the intensity of the flames made it impossible to save the structure, resulting in extensive damage.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

This dormitory was especially significant for Sangab National HighSchool, which caters to students from the Mandaya tribe.

Nestled in the mountainous terrain of Caraga, near the borders of Davao de Oro and Surigao provinces, the school plays a vital role in educating the local Indigenous population.

The destruction of the Teachers’ Dormitory has profound implications, not only for the educators who depended on it for housing but also for the entire community. It stands as a symbol of the commitment to providing quality education in this underserved area. In the face of this tragedy, students and teachers are rallying together, exemplifying the strong sense of community that defines the region during this challenging time.
