Chief Justice Sereno takes “Wellness leave”

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Embattled Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno is taking an indefinite “Wellness Leave” starting today, February 27, 2018.

Sereno is filing a leave as the House committee on justice is expected to vote next week on probable cause in the impeachment case against her. The panel will send a committee report to the plenary.

Sereno’s leave was just in time when  Congress wrapped up the impeachment hearings.

House Justice Committee Chair Congressman Reynaldo Umali, who was informed by reporters about the leave of Sereno,  said it is “A welcome news” saying “This will give her time to reflect on what would be best for the judiciary she heads.”

Reports also revealed, Sereno was reportedly asked by the SC en banc to go on leave, to prepare for the Senate impeachment trial.

Sereno was scheduled to enjoy her leave starting march 12 to 23 but she opted to take a leave earlier.

Next week, Umali’s Committee will bring the impeachment case before the plenary for the members of Congress to  vote on the probable cause in the impeachment case filed against Sereno.

The Congress needs at least one-third vote from the members of the House of Representatives, or 98 out of the 292 incumbent congressmen, to continue for the  impeachment trial at the Senate.

Sereno is accused of violating the Constitution, corruption, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes – grounds for officials to be impeached under the Constitution.

The impeachment case prompted calls for the chief magistrate to resign.

Sereno repeatedly denied all allegations against her and asked for the complaint to be junked.-Editha Z. Caduaya/Newsline.ph
