Garbage threatens marine ecosystem: DENR

Posted on

PAGADIAN CITY – Garbage disposed into the rivers are eventually washed to the sea and badly affects the marine ecosystem.

Saving the environment depends on the contribution of the people in their respective localities, was the message of Tito Gadon, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) assistant regional director for management services in Region 9.

Gadon said that riverbank dwellers throw their garbage and other waste materials into the river which are later washed to the sea by strong current during rainy season.

“These type of people’s contribution affects the marine ecosystem which causes damages and exploiting the seas,” Gadon added.

DENR personnel together with other stakeholders, government agencies and members of the media conducted a clean-up drive and planting of mangrove propagules.

Earlier, DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu threatened to replace DENR officials who will fail to clean up the rivers within their area of jurisdiction. (with PNA reports)
