PAGADIAN CITY – Garbage disposed into the rivers are eventually washed to the sea and badly affects the marine ecosystem.
Saving
the environment depends on the contribution of the people in their respective
localities, was the message of Tito Gadon, Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) assistant regional director for management services in
Region 9.
Gadon said that riverbank dwellers throw their garbage and other waste
materials into the river which are later washed to the sea by strong current
during rainy season.
“These type of people’s contribution affects the marine ecosystem which causes
damages and exploiting the seas,” Gadon added.
DENR
personnel together with other stakeholders, government agencies and members of
the media conducted a clean-up drive and planting of mangrove propagules.
Earlier, DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu threatened to replace DENR officials who
will fail to clean up the rivers within their area of jurisdiction. (with
