ZAMBOANGA CITY — A trainee of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was killed while three others were injured in a three-vehicle smashup in Pagadian City, a police official disclosed Saturday.
Lt. Col. Alvin Saguban, Pagadian City police chief, said the incident that involved two trucks and a motorcycle and occurred around 5:10 a.m. Saturday in Barangay Tiguma, Pagadian City.
Saguban identified the fatality as Jail Officer 1 (JO1) Junrey Benag, 26, a resident of Barangay Sto. Niño, Pagadian City.
Wounded was Walter Eslit, driver of one of the two trucks, and his two assistants, whose names were not immediately available.
Saguban said investigation showed that Benag was on his motorcycle on the way to the BJMP headquarters to attend the last day of his training when bumped by a truck loaded with animal feeds driven by Eslit.
Benag was thrown off his motorcycle and died instantly due to the impact of the collision, he said.
The truck driven by Eslit then crashed on another truck, which was parked at the side of the road. Both vehicles were damaged, he added.
Eslit admitted to have dozed off while driving en route to Cagayan de Oro City, Saguban said.
He said Benag was supposed to report for duty at the BJMP starting Monday. -PNA
