ILIGAN CITY —– A barangay treasure and an employee of the local government unit of Lugait town in Misamis Oriental were arrested for conducting ‘cockfighting’, Saturday afternoon, April 4, in Barangay Kaluknayan, Lugait.
This despite the implementation of enhanced community quarantine that suspended mass gatherings including gambling like cockfights or derby to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The arrested personalities are identified as Dennis Estenzo, 58, treasurer of Barangay Poblacion, Lugait and Danilo Bugay, 58, a job order worker of the local government unit (LGU).
Captain Edgardo Balido, chief of Lugait Municipal Police Station said the two and nine others, including the organizer of the cockfight identified as Darwin Cabarobias were caught while in a place temporarily converted into a cockfighting area.
Cabarobias, 46, is a resident of Barangay Bunawan, Iligan City, some 20 kilometers away.
Balido said some concerned residents reported to them the activity that prompted them to act. Authorities seized two fighting cocks.
The arrested personalities are facing a violation of the Presidéntial Decree 1602 or the Philippine Gambling Law.
