DAVAO CITY — Traffic was monstrous as hundreds of motorists were stranded while the majority went back to their route when floodwaters from the hinterlands of Toril District here flowed up to the Davao -Cotabato national Highway, particularly at the Task Force Davao Checkpoint about 9:00 pm December 30.
The city has been experiencing sporadic rains the past few days.
The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Council in a report stated that as of 8:25 of December 30, the city has experienced intermittent light to moderate rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
But at about 9:00 pm, a resident of Catigan said they were surprised when the floodwaters cascaded from the upland area of their barangay.
The Davao City operations center reported that the flood-hit Purok 8 of Villa De Mercedes, Sitio Cogon, Barangay Sirawan.
The Task Force Davao checkpoint is located at the mouth of the road leading to Barangay Catigan.
Barangay Catigan is part of the so-called “Tri-ridges Hill” comprising Barangays Catigan-Tagurano and Eden, considered as the mountainous area of Toril Diistrict,
The Sirawan highway connects Davao City to the provinces of South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, BARMM, Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat.
As of 7:00 am December 31, the road was rendered passable but the clearing operation continued.
