Trapped Indoors: 40% of Filipino Teens Go an Entire Week Without 1 Hour of Play

MANILA (November 7) — Four out of every ten Filipino teenagers are spending their entire week without a single hour of physical play or exercise, locked into sedentary routines that make them among the least active youth on the planet.

According to a landmark global study published in The Lancet Global Health by the World Health Organization (WHO), roughly 40% of local adolescents aged 11 to 17 reported zero “active days”—failing to hit even 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous movement like sports, cycling, or active recreation in a full seven-day stretch. That is nearly double the global average of 25%, grouping the Philippines alongside countries like Nepal and Namibia at the bottom of worldwide physical activity rankings.

Stagnant Progress and a Growing Gender Gap

The country’s youth inactivity rate has remained practically frozen for over a decade, shifting marginally from 40.85% in 2010 to 40.32% in 2025.

The data also highlights a concerning gender disparity. Filipino teenage girls are consistently less active than boys, with 42.70% reporting no active days in 2025 compared to 38.00% of boys—a gap that has widened steadily over the past five years.

Globally, the picture is equally stagnant. Across 140 countries, around 240 million adolescents get no exercise at all, and only 14% manage to meet the recommended daily 60-minute threshold.

Beyond Personal Choice: The Need for Safer Environments

Health experts emphasize that inactivity is not merely a matter of teenage laziness or screen time. The WHO notes that structural barriers—such as unsafe streets, lack of public parks, car-centric urban design, and limited recreational programs in schools—play a primary role in keeping kids indoors.

“The answer is not to tell adolescents to try harder. It is to build schools, streets, and communities where moving, playing, and being active is safe, easy, and normal.”

— Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General

With physical inactivity serving as a leading risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and early-onset cancers, the health agency is urging local governments, urban planners, and educators to collaborate on safer infrastructure, active transport lanes, and accessible sports programs to get young Filipinos moving again.
