DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A truck driver and his helper were killed when their vehicle’s cargo of steel sheet piles pushed forward into the cab after a sudden stop on Carlos P. Garcia Highway near the cargo entrance of Davao International Airport at 2:55 p.m. on June 25.

According to a report by the Buhangin police, the victims were identified as Nestor Dela Cruz Doronio, 56, a driver from New Ilocos, Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur, and his helper, KR Salem Rasonable, 24, from Km. 82 Marber, Bansalan, Davao Del Sur.

The initial investigation revealed that the truck, loaded with fifty (50) 12mm sheet piles, was traveling towards central Davao City when an Airport Security Assistant, identified as Evalonie Intia Martinez, suddenly crossed the road when the green traffic light was in effect. This prompted Doronio to brake abruptly.

A video that is now circulating online showed, that Martinez just disembarked from a public utility jitney and immediately crossed the street ignoring the traffic signal light.

The sudden stop caused the heavy cargo to lurch forward, crushing Doronio and Rasonable inside the cab and resulting in their deaths.

Martinez was taken to Buhangin police station for questioning. It was reported that Martinez used the pedestrian lane when crossing the road.
