Two towns under state of calamity after 6.3 quake

DAVAO CITY —The municipal councils of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur and Makilala in North Cotabato have been declare under the state of calamity following the 6.3 magnitude of earthquake last October 16.

Early this morning, Saturday, October 19, at 5:52 a.m, The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) , reported a magnitude 5.0 quake rocked Tulunan in North Cotabato, with intensities felt as far as General Santos City and Kiamba, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said the tremor was traced 27 km. east of Tulunan and had a depth of only 12 km.

Magsaysay, Davao del Sur town mayor Arthur Davin said the Municipal Council on Friday declared the town under the state of calamity following the assessment conducted by the Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC ) recommendation.

Residents of all 22 barangays in said town are affected by the quake which claimed the lives of three.

The Municipal Council of Makilala has unanimously declared the town under a State of Calamity, during the speciall session held last Thursday, October 17.

Makilala Mayor Armando Quibod said they have been sending relief assistance to the affected residents.

While Tulunan Mayor Pip Pedregoza Limbungan said the local government is also considering the declaration of state of calamity.

We are just awaiting the completion of assessment and evaluation of the damages brought by the tragedy before we would decide,” Limbungan said.

The Makilala LGU recorded 22 casualties during the quake, mostly bruises and contusions.

Davin for his part said, the town recorded 204 totally damaged houses; 650 partially damaged, 477 sightly damaged.

Davin said 910 families have evacuated to a safer ground as aftershocks continues.

The local government has provided food stuff and other emergency interventions to the affected residents.-ezc
