August 12, 2022 by NewsLine Philippines

DAVAO CITY — To give meaning to the commemoration of this year’s nutrition month, a village in Lamitan City, Basilan province, held a competition among families using community harvested vegetables as major engriedients.

The competition was dubbed “Me and My Buddy Chef” was held in Barangay Malinis Covered Court involving families and their children in the competition,

July has been designated as Nutrition Month by the late President Ferdinand Marcos in 1974. Forty-eight years later, Nutrition Month is an institutionalized activity in the country.

Barangay Malinis Village Chief Eunice Gammad Sangalang told Newsline ” We launch the activity because it is important for us to eat nutritious food and the family cook together to bond the parents and the siblings.”

A mother and her daughter prepares their dish for the presentation before the judges.

The competition was dubbed “”Me and My Buddy Chef cooking competition.” The participants used the same ingredients provided by the barangay officials but they cook it the way they want but another policy is that: they must not use artificial ingredients nor monosodium glutamate.

In the barangay Competition, a family must cook the dish together using the same ingredients

Asked why they celebrate the Nutrition month in August when it should have been July, Sangalang explained :Our celebration was affected by the death of our former Mayor, we respect her wake so we deferred it.”

The village chief was referring to the death of Lamitan City former Mayor Rosita Furigay who was killed at the vicinity of Ateneo de Manila Universityon July 24, 2022 along with her personal aide Victor Capistrano and security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

In the barangay Competition, a family must cook the dish together using the same ingredients but every dish must highlight the use of vegestables.

The families were provided fish for and vegetables and the grand winner received cash, 25 kilos of rice , food and grocery stuff.
