80 corn farmers get fertilizers from government

DAVAO CITY — Eighty (80) corn farmers from Alabel town in Sarangani province received fertilizer vouchers from the Department of Agriculture (DA) regional office 12 on Monday.

The fertilizer vouchers amounting to P2,000 each were received during the turn over ceremony held at the Barangay Alabel covered court which was attended by OIC municipal agriculturist Giselle Gestupa.

The beneficiaries thanked the agency for their prompt intervention as corn planting season is about to start.

Region 12 which covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat is among the country’s corn producers.

In 2008, Region 12 produced 1,117,781 metric tons of corn which contributes 13 percent to the total corn production in the Philippines.

Days before the turn over ceremony, a consultation meeting with the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG), farmers association/People’s Organizations and the military’s 73rd Infantry Battalion to ensure that their communities were free from communist insurgents.

Among the farmers association which attended the conference include Basyawan Farmers Association (Sitio Basyawan, Pagasa), Bukay-El Farmers Association( Pagasa), Kasbakas I Dad Libun I Banwe Nope Association (Noon, Spring), Saying Kasbakas Integrated Farmers Association ( Sitio Nayong, Paraiso), and Ihan Farmers Association (Sitio Ihan, Datal Anggas).
