DAVAO CITY — —Ninety former rebels started their journey toward a peaceful life after being welcomed back to society during a ceremony on October 30, 2024, at the Governor Vicente T. Pimentel Multi-purpose Hall.

The event, organized by the Local Government Unit of Surigao del Sur and the 4th Infantry Division, celebrated their return and aimed to encourage others in the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) to surrender. This effort is part of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) to end local armed conflict.

The former rebels surrendered their weapons to the military and police, presenting 36 high-powered firearms to Surigao del Sur Governor Alexander T. Pimentel. Key officials, including military and police leaders, attended the ceremony to show their support for the former rebels.

During the event, Pimentel led the former rebels in taking an Oath of Allegiance, symbolizing their commitment to peace. He thanked them for their decision to abandon the armed struggle and assured them of ongoing local government support as they start anew.

Major General Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II praised the former rebels for reuniting with their families and pledged continued collaboration with local governments to achieve lasting peace and development in the region.
