ILIGAN CITY (July 19) —– Residents and vendors along Mercardo Street in Barangay Poblacion panicked upon discovery of an abandoned box which turned out to be a pile domestic garbage early yesterday morning.

Alarmed residents immediately called the police, a team from the Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) discovered, an abandoned large box which contained garbage.

The team was about to disrupt said box, but they noticed no wiring was attached which is usually the mark for an improvised explosive device, it was then that the police manually destroyed the box.

Abalde, chief of Iligan City Police Station 5, said the circuit television footages showed that a toyota sedan dropped the box in front of an electronic store, around 5:00 o’clock yesterday morning.

The area is about 200 meters away from a mall and about 600 meters away from the passengers gate of the Philippine Ports Authority.

Police investigators noted the licensed plate of the car and they will invite the owner to explain why they abandoned the box in a commercial district which caused panic among residents.

In Davao City, an ordinance was approved in 2017, which penalized a person or persons who abandon box and bags in public places and places of convergence.-Divina M. Suson/NewsLine.ph
