September class opening not yet final – DepEd

DAVAO CITY — Reports that the school year 2020-2021 opens in September is not yet final, said Department of Education (DepEd) XI spokesperson Jenielito Atillo on Friday.

Atillo said the Education department has yet to submit its position on the proposed September opening of classes before the Inter-Agency Task Force on Infectious Diseases.

The DepEd will base its recommendation pursuant to the letter and spirit of the Republic Act RA 7797 (An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from 200 Days to not more than 220 Class Days).

This law states that “classes can be opened on the 1st day of June and not later than the last day of August.”

Atillo quoted the DepEd position which states “Vital also to the DepEd presentation is the information we have siphoned out from different sources through the nationwide consultation and survey that we have conducted where majority of the respondents favored the month of August.”

Given this condition, Atillo said every just have to wait for the final schedule as the same will be announced by Secretary Leonor Briones.
