ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is deeply saddened over the passing of BARMM Deputy Chief Minister Abdul Sahrin, 70, who lost a battle with brain tumor.

BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim, who describes Sahrin, a “dear-friend and a brother” in the Bangsamoro struggle, said his deputy died midnight Wednesday at the Zamboanga Peninsula Medical Center in Barangay Putik, this city, after a month-long battle with brain tumor.

Ebrahim said that Sahrin, the Moro National Liberation Front’s (MNLF) secretary-general, was a key figure in fighting for their right to self-determination and working towards their shared vision of a peaceful and progressive Bangsamoro.

“Brother Cong has been essential in helping us reach the island provinces and introduce our cause in building moral governance and a bureaucracy that can truly address the plight of the Bangsamoro people,” Ebrahim said.

“We will honor his life and legacy by making sure that out work for the people continue with the highest standard,” he said. “We join his bereaved family, friends, comrades and followers in grieving his loss,” he added.

The BARMM government has yet to choose a replacement for Sahrin as the deputy chief minister. Sahrin is also known as “Hassan Jawali” and “Cong” to his comrades. He served as a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) parliament. “We will know when parliament convenes next week,” BTA member Amir Mawallil said in a statement.-Newsline
