Davao village sets up own vaccination hub

September 5, 2021 by Editha Z. Caduaya

DAVAO CITY — As Coronavirus cases snowballs, a village here is trying to catch up in the city’s vaccination effort and puts up a site where villagers get vaccinated.

On Saturday, September 4, 2021, 530 residents registered but only 430 showed up for its first dose of Sinopharm vaccine, while many of those who failed to show up got their vaccines earlier like Christina who told Newsline, she was vaccinated in a mall but she wants her sister to replace her slot but she was told they need to go through a process as details and other personal information must be encoded.

On Sunday. September 5, the Department of Health Davao region in a statement reported 1,123 new cases of COVID-19 in the region bringing the total number of active cases to 14,651.

Of these new cases, 586 are from Davao City, 43 from Davao de Oro, 154 from Davao del Norte, 140 from Davao del Sur, 79 from Davao Occidental, and 121 from Davao Oriental. There are 104 recoveries reported today. Among these, 80 are from Davao City, and 24 from Davao Oriental.

There are 4 death cases reported today. Among these, 2 are from Davao City, and 2 from Davao de Oro.Al cases reported today are local cases.

With these cases, the region has 20.6% available ICU beds, 41.7% available Isolation beds, 25.9% available Ward beds, and 66.3% available Mechanical ventilators.

During the Saturday vaccination jab at Catalunan Grande, Anthony, a private firm employee, trembled as he entered the vaccination site, “I have mixed feelings, is it painful? Is it safe? But I need to get vaccinated because I am working and my mother is a senior citizen and I must protect her.”

Anthony attributes his fear and anxiety to the different reactions and reports he read on social media but on Satuday he finally got the courage to fight the fear inside him for his mother’s sake.

After about an hour, while he was resting at the low risk resting are, Anthony said, “It was not painful, it was so quick, and I feel okay.”

For Larry Serna, 56 years old, getting vaccinated is necessary not only for self protection but for the community to heal and for the economy to regain its momentum. “We should cooperate if we want to go back to our normal lives, it is free, do not be afraid, do not hesitate,” he said in vernacular.

The effort to conduct a barangay initiated vaccination hub was conceived by Davao City First District Representative Paolo Z. Duterte whose wife January sits as the Barangay Captain of Catalunan Grande.

The site also allows residents from other barangays to get inoculated as its is aimed at attaining herd immunity in the city in the midst of the Covid-19 threat.

Leonardo Aquino, the village administrator said Davao city will reach its goal to achieve population protection by speeding up vaccination drives and making it more accessible to its community.

Aquino said, the village will open the vaccination hub every Saturdays and Sunday,

Catalunan Grande aims to inoculate 40,000 residents while the city government is targeting to vaccinate 70 percent of its total population, or 1.2 million residents, to achieve population protection.

Dr. Ely Buenaventura, City Health Office (CHO) rural health physician, said Catalunan Grande was the first barangay in the city to roll out the Sinopharm vaccine.
