Rooftop of Davao City Jail is also veggie garden

DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Jail is not just a prison facility for suspected criminals but a hub where fresh vegetables are housed.

This, after jail personnel, maximized the annex rooftop and make it a garden that now produces a substantial amount of vegetables.

In a Facebook post of the BJMP, it invited buyers “Bountiful amount of Pechay is now ready to produce additional crops to diversify its inventory.”

It added “The successful urban gardening project initiated by its “green-thumb” jail warden JSInsp Erwin B. Esden is now preparing to produce and distribute a variety of vegetables and spices. These chemical-free crops include; okra, kamatis, ampalaya, sitaw, tinangkong, and sili carefully sown ang nurtured by its caretakers comprised of Person Deprived of Liberty.”

Among the available vegetables include Green and Red lettuce which is sold at fifty pesos (P50) per pack.

Proceeds from this will help support the livelihood of the caretakers of the garden and the longevity of the urban gardening project.
