Dapitan LGU honors outstanding residents

June 23, 2023 by Dynah Gay Diestro

DAPITAN –The local government of Dapitan City recently presented awards to the esteemed residents who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of the city. The distinguished recognition, known as the Gawad Dapitanon: Rizal Exemplar Award 2023, was bestowed upon them during a heartfelt ceremony.

Ever since its establishment as a city in 1963, Dapitan has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a modern and flourishing urban center. This incredible journey began with the arrival and residency of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

“Atty. Amalou Monroyo, the City Administrator, highlighted Rizal’s visionary perspective for the area, as he leveraged his expertise as a licensed land surveyor to uplift his place of exile. Looking ahead to 2023, Dapitan has transcended its origins as a remote and dormant town, emerging as a city steeped in history, offering world-class entertainment and recreational facilities, boasting competitive educational institutions and healthcare programs. Dapitan has embraced progress while maintaining its quaint and laid-back charm, while cherishing its timeless customs and traditions,” she expressed.

Mayor Seth Frederick Jalojos added, “Today, we pay tribute to the legacy of one of the Philippines’ greatest heroes, Jose Rizal. Through the Gawad Dapitanon Award, we honor extraordinary individuals who embody the ideals of Rizal and have demonstrated exceptional service to the nation and its people. This recognition serves to honor Rizal’s memory and acknowledge those who share his unwavering commitment. As we celebrate the 60th Founding Anniversary of Dapitan, it is crucial to recognize the invaluable contributions of its residents to the city’s progress.”

The inaugural recipients of this esteemed award were the families of the Dapitan residents who played pivotal roles in transforming the town into a full-fledged city. This historic milestone was achieved on June 22, 1963, through the unwavering dedication of President Diosdado Macapagal.

Justice Florentino Saguin, Governor Leoncio Hamoy, and Florentino Cad collaborated to inspire the residents, emphasizing the importance of unity in their collective effort to elevate Dapitan to its status as a place of great historical significance.

One of the awardees, Consuelo Saguin Bruton, expressed her joy and deep appreciation. “It was a delightful and pleasant surprise, and it provides a wonderful opportunity to honor my grandfather, whom we hold in high regard. Although I grew up in Manila, I spent my summers here, creating countless memories. My grandfather would gather the entire family, and together, we would enjoy picnics at the park near the Rizal Shrine. Those are my cherished recollections of Dapitan in the ’60s.”

Rex Angelo Hamoy, another deserving awardee, extended his gratitude to Mayor Frederick Jalojos and the Local Government of Dapitan for acknowledging the efforts of his grandfather, Atty. Leoncio Hamoy, in laying the foundation for the city of Dapitan. Overcoming various challenges, including meeting the requirements of territory, income, and population, Dapitan earned the distinction of becoming a city even before the progressive city of Dipolog. It proudly held the distinction of being the first city in Zamboanga del Norte.

This year, a total of twenty-three remarkable residents were recognized and celebrated by the local government of Dapitan for their exemplary contributions and selfless acts that have greatly influenced the city’s progress.
