DAVAO CITY — While struggling to produce about a million licensed plates, the Land Transportation Office has 1.7 million unclaimed license plates stored in different regional districts all over the country.

Until now, the agency has yet to cope with the backlog and the issue on the release of over a million lilcensed plates has surfaced.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said he earlier asked Land Transportation Office OIC Hector Villacorta to do an inventory of all available license plates to check the status of the country’s license plate backlog.

The agency, according to Bautista is planning to put up an App for motor vehicle owners to check on the availability of their plates providing the agency the name and plate number and check which district office has the plates.

Topping the lists of unclaimed licensed plates are for motorcycle plates.

It can be recalled that years ago, the agency run shortage of licensed plates and allowed the motorists to use temporary plates with LTO stamp.

Like the previous shortage, the LTO has yet to announce when will the shortage be settled.
