DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Mayor John Dalipe of Zamboanga City has taken a firm stance against smuggling, focusing particularly on smuggled cigarettes and other contraband. In an interview with Newsline, Dalipe emphasized his administration’s commitment to eradicating smuggling activities through various measures and operations.
“I stand firm; I have a zero-tolerance policy against smuggling. I have given directives to local law enforcement agencies to intensify their efforts in cracking down on smuggled goods, especially cigarettes. This includes inspecting stores and street vendors to ensure they are not selling smuggled products,” Dalipe stated.
In January 2024, a significant operation led by Marine troops and various other agencies resulted in the seizure of PHP 114 million worth of smuggled cigarettes. Dalipe expressed his support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s campaign against smuggling.
For years, Zamboanga has been a hotspot for various smuggling activities, from rice and cigarettes to even the smallest items. However, Dalipe asserted that this must end, even if it is unpopular, because government policy must prevail.
His administration has been actively involved in the confiscation and destruction of large quantities of smuggled goods. In March 2024, for example, a significant quantity of smuggled cigarettes worth PHP 323 million was destroyed as a demonstration of the city’s serious stance against smuggling.
These efforts illustrate Dalipe’s proactive approach to tackling smuggling in Zamboanga City, reflecting his administration’s dedication to law enforcement and public welfare. “Every business must be accounted for, and taxes due to the government must be paid,” he added.
