Task Force Davao Commander Col. Comia replaced, honored for outstanding service

December 9, 2024 by Editha Z. Caduaya

DAVAO CITY – After more than three years of dedicated service, Task Force Davao Commander Col. Darren Comia stepped down on December 1, replaced by Col. Sony Mariñas, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1997. The turnover ceremony was held privately, attended only by Task Force Davao personnel and officers.

The Davao City Council passed a resolution commending Col. Comia for his exemplary contributions to the city’s peace and order during his tenure as TF Davao commander. Authored by Councilor Luna Maria Dominique Acosta, chairperson of the Committee on Peace and Order, the resolution highlighted Col. Comia’s effective anti-terrorism strategies and his role in ensuring that no terror attacks occurred in Davao City under his leadership.

Acosta highlighted achievements during Col. Comia’s Tenure

  1. Anti-Terrorism Efforts:
    • TF Davao conducted 258 anti-terrorism forums attended by approximately 65,000 residents, significantly raising public awareness and preparedness against terrorism.
    • Initiatives such as the Ulama Peace Summit, Interfaith Prayer for World Peace, and the Muslim Youth Congress fostered interfaith collaboration and community resilience.
  2. Apprehensions and Law Enforcement:
    • Arrested 625 individuals for illegal drug courier activities.
    • Apprehended 61 suspects for violations of RA No. 4712 (Tariff and Customs Code).
    • Captured 131 individuals for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition under RA 10591.
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Organized eight Kulturavans, benefiting around 9,000 individuals, showcasing cultural understanding and unity.
  4. Personnel Development:
    • Promoted 82 TF Davao personnel to higher ranks.
    • Awarded decorations and citations to 1,599 personnel, boosting morale and recognizing their efforts.

Acosta emphasized that Col. Comia’s leadership brought honor not only to TF Davao but also to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). “Col. Comia’s exceptional leadership and unrelenting dedication to public safety are commendable. He has continuously demonstrated remarkable professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the ideals of justice and service,” she said.

The resolution underscored that the absence of terror attacks during Col. Comia’s tenure was a testament to the effectiveness of his strategies, intelligence operations, and collaborative efforts among security forces and stakeholders.

As Col. Sony Mariñas assumes command of TF Davao, the city officials and residents expressed their gratitude to Col. Comia for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors.
