CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (October 22 – Northern Mindanao now leads the island in digital connectivity with 1,218 active free Wi-Fi hotspots, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) reported Monday.

DICT–10 Director Sittie Rahma Alawi said the rollout under the Free Wi-Fi for All Program will further expand this year as President Marcos ordered all public schools to be connected through a partnership with the Department of Education.

She added that the National Broadband Program, supported by the Japanese government, will soon enhance internet access across Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

DTI–10 Director Ruel Paclipan said better connectivity is fueling economic activity as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) embrace e-commerce and expand logistics networks.

Logistics firm Ninja Van cited Northern Mindanao’s strong online trade as a key driver of the island’s ₱1-trillion economy, while Shell Lubricants Philippines plans to boost services for the logistics sector.

“Digital access is powering communities and creating opportunities,” Paclipan said.
