DAVAO CITY (December 16)  — The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Davao del Norte provincial government are exploring investments in small modular reactors (SMRs) and data center infrastructure as part of efforts to strengthen Mindanao’s energy transition and digital competitiveness.

The discussions followed a strategic visit to Hyundai Engineering and Construction in Korea under the Mindanao Investment Mission, which seeks to attract technology-driven investments amid improving security conditions in the region.

MinDA Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso Magno said the initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to accelerate energy security and digital infrastructure development nationwide.

Officials said potential SMR deployment supports Mindanao’s target 50:50 energy mix, providing low-carbon baseload power to complement intermittent renewable sources such as solar and hydro while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib, also chair of RDC-11, said the province is ready to work with investors, regulators, and communities to ensure project viability and compliance.

MinDA said continued engagement with global firms like Hyundai positions Mindanao as a future-ready investment destination for clean energy and digital infrastructure.
