KIDAPAWAN CITY –— The newly installed Artificial Intelligence or AI-operated local traffic signalization system will be put to test anytime this week, said Mayor Paolo Evangelista.
The city government embarked on the automated traffic system saying the AI technology is better because it is automated and no more humans manning the streets.
The system, according to Evangelista, follows standard and real-time, it automatically provides a signal to an occupied lane if it senses a traffic build-up.
The AI-assisted system can detect real-time data resulting in good traffic management, and optimizes traffic signal timings, route suggestions, and management.
The system can also detect traffic accidents and hazards and ensure safety among motorists and pedestrians.
The AI-assisted traffic lights were installed at Crossing Barracks and Crossing Singao, the established traffic choke points considering the volume of motorists passing said areas.
Kidapawan City has recorded more than 16,000 registered business establishments with over 20,000 vehicles.
Apart from the two traffic lights that will be operational this month, the towering roundabout at Mangga crossing, the intersection of Poblacion, Brgy Lanao, and the town of Magpet will be removed. It will be replaced with a traffic light because it will help the traffic, said the Mayor.
According to the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit (TMEU) head Boy Sernal, they will conduct an orientation for public vehicle drivers and have a two-week dry-run before implementing the new A-I assisted traffic light system here.
During the days of the dry run, the government will not impose penalties on those who violate traffic laws.
Based on the AI traffic system installed in Los Angeles in the United States and Copenhagen, Denmark, the AI optimizes traffic signal timings, route suggestions, and lane management to reduce congestion and travel times.
The system is dependent on power and internet connectivity.
The power here is distributed by Cotabato Electric Cooperative, and issues regarding shortage of supply have raised concern among residents once the AI traffic System starts to operate.
