MANILA — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Tuesday filed before the Department of Justice criminal charges against a businesswoman in Cagayan de Oro City.

BIR officials filed criminal complaints against Mariequel R. Rotallas of the Misamis Orienal-based Wytex Welding Trade and Consultancy for failing to pay PHP13.48 million in taxes.

The firm is engaged in building, construction, civil engineering and consultancy.

The BIR’s Cagayan de Oro Revenue Region No. 16 noted that it served letter notices (LNs), letters of authority (LAs), requests for presentation of records, subpoenas, preliminary assessment notices and formal letters of demands on the taxpayer.

The respondent, however, failed to pay or protest and submit relevant supporting documents to substantiate their claims or to refute the assessments.

“The respondent’s obstinate failure and continued refusal to pay her long overdue deficiency taxes, despite repeated demands, constitute willful failure to pay the taxes due the government,” the BIR said in a statement.

The filing of the charges is in line with the bureau’s Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program. –PNA
