DAVAO CITY —- Despite the sporadic increase in various goods in the malls and markets here, the prices of chicken and pork remain stable in the city’s public market-Bankerohan as of Thursday, July 14, 2022.

Meat and pork dealers lament, they struggle to sell their goods as the number of marketgoers significantly reduced as school year 2022-2023 is in the offing.

“We have stable supply of pork here, our sale is just okay but the number of buyers tremendously reduced, so, we need to double our effort to dispose our carcass,” says Grace Corvera in vernacular.

A kilo of loin remains at P310.00 while belly is pegged at P350 and the supply is still stable despite the temporary closure of the city-owned Davao City slaughterhouse after the discovery of an ASF positive meat..

The city has cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) but the vendors are taking their supply from hog raisers certified safe by the City Veterinarian’s Office.

Corvera said “Our supply is enough but the buying capacity of the people have been affected due to other factors. Our loyal customers are still with us. I have a customer who owns a hotel, we supply 100 kilos of loin everyday,” she said in vernacular.

The chicken section of Bankerohan Public market shares the same situation, according to Juliet Marabilla, a retailer.

The supply of chicken, Maravilla said is high “Mao na nga ningbarato ang presyo (that’s why the price went down).

For her clients, Marbilla displays ten (10) big plastic bags of chicken daily, with each bag containing 15 to 20 pieces.

“We have enough supply today, but our problem is the slow market movement, fewer buyers compared before. So, we adjusted the price just to keep going.”

The prices of chicken slipped from then P250 to P200 and today, it is P190, she added “We need to adjust our prices to dispose our stocks, because the price is erratic- today is low and tomorrow it might increase.”

According to the vendors, it pays to have loyal customers because it will ensure daily sales.-Eugene Hinutan/Newsline
