DAVAO CITY (June 28) — After nearly a year marked by discipline, reform, and results, Colonel Hansel Marantan has been reassigned to the Police Peace Process and Development Center (PPDC) at Camp Crame. This prestigious post positions him for promotion to general rank.

The transfer, detailed in a special order signed by PLtGen Edgar Allan Okubo on June 27, comes on the heels of two significant developments: his acquittal in the 2013 Atimonan shootout case and a unanimous commendation from the Davao City Council for his exceptional leadership as Acting Director of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).

A Tenure Defined by Performance

Marantan, appointed in July 2024 despite initial political friction, quickly proved himself in Davao. Under his leadership:

  • ✅ 100% Crime Clearance was recorded — all 760 index crimes resolved.
  • 🗳️ Zero election-related violence during the 2023 Barangay and SK elections.
  • 💊 Key contributions to anti-drug operations and the Quiboloy manhunt.
  • 🤝 Barangayanihan outreach brought police services to remote barangays, boosting public trust.

Despite health issues stemming from past operations including spinal implants, a total knee replacement, and 52 surgical screws, Marantan remained active until June 2025, when he filed for relief due to chronic pain. During an emotional final appearance before the Davao City Council, the body passed a resolution praising his “integrity, professionalism, and dedication to public safety.”

Vindicated After 12 Years

On June 23, 2025, a Manila court cleared Marantan of multiple murder charges in the infamous 2013 Atimonan shootout, calling the operation a “justified law enforcement action”. The court cited unlawful aggression from the suspects and Marantan’s gunshot wounds as key evidence.

The acquittal not only closed a 12-year legal battle but also reestablished Marantan’s name in full. His reassignment to PPDC, a role typically entrusted to high-trust, high-integrity officers, highlighted his redemption and rising stature in the national police force.

A New Mission, A Clear Trajectory

Marantan’s new role at the PPDC will involve leading peace-building initiatives, particularly in conflict-prone areas, an assignment reflecting both his operational experience and capacity to foster stability.

Police Regional Office XI Director Arguelles vacated the post and is widely seen as a stepping stone to a star rank (Brigadier General).

From being “unwanted” at the start of his Davao posting to now being fast-tracked for higher command, Marantan’s story is more than a comeback; it’s a statement. Acquitted, commended, and now elevated, Col. Hansel Marantan is entering a new chapter: not just defending the badge, but reshaping what it means to wear one.
