DAVAO CITY –— The Department of Agriculture (DA) and global ocean exploration nonprofit OceanX have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to assess the health and diversity of Philippine fisheries and marine food resources.

The initiative will use OceanX’s advanced research vessel, OceanXplorer, to explore and analyze the country’s marine ecosystems.

The agreement, formalized by DA Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. and OceanX Co-CEO Mark Dalio, seek to enhance collaborative efforts in marine research and sustainability. The partnership is expected to focus on studying and protecting the country’s rich marine biodiversity while promoting sustainable development.

“This collaboration will provide invaluable insights into our marine resources, our vast coastline, and the unique biodiversity we hold. The data gathered will help us develop better strategies for preservation and optimization, ensuring that these resources are protected for future generations,” said Secretary Tiu Laurel.

Dalio emphasized the role of OceanXplorer’s cutting-edge technology in marine exploration. “Our partnership with the Department of Agriculture demonstrates how science and innovation can work together to support communities that depend on marine ecosystems.

This collaboration aims to inspire ocean stewardship and equip future generations with the knowledge and tools for sustainability,” he said.

While specific research details are still being finalized, the initiative highlights the Philippines’ commitment to marine conservation. The partnership aims to advance scientific exploration and sustainable resource management, benefiting both local communities and global environmental efforts.

The collaboration aligns with the government’s broader efforts to protect marine ecosystems vital to food security and environmental health.
