DAVAO CITY (June 1) – Davao City has reaffirmed its strong commitment to education, recording a 93.5% basic literacy rate among individuals aged five and above—the highest in the entire Davao Region.

This milestone was revealed in the 2024 Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Davao.

Basic literacy refers to the ability to read and write simple messages in any language. Davao City’s impressive figure reflects its consistent progress in expanding access to learning and improving foundational education, outpacing other provinces and cities in Region XI.

According to PSA Davao, this achievement signals the city’s growing success in implementing inclusive education programs, particularly in areas with limited access to formal schooling.

Reynante A. Solitario, Schools Division Superintendent of DepEd Davao City, expressed pride in the city’s educational strides:

“This remarkable accomplishment is a reflection of our collective commitment to education—from our hardworking learners and dedicated teachers to supportive parents, school leaders, and local government partners,” Solitario said.

“It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we prioritize learning and inclusivity for every child and citizen. To our educators, thank you for your unwavering service. To our stakeholders, thank you for believing in the power of education. And to every Davaoeño learner—continue to strive, grow, and shine. Let us work together to sustain this momentum and push even further toward a literate, empowered, and progressive Davao City.”

The city has launched numerous literacy initiatives, including community-based learning programs, early grade interventions, and support for out-of-school youth and adult education. DepEd Davao and the city government have also collaborated with private partners and local stakeholders to provide learning resources and teacher training focused on literacy.

Education advocates view this achievement as a strong indicator that Davao City is on the right path toward ensuring accessible, inclusive, and quality education for all.

As the city celebrates this recognition, educators and stakeholders remain focused on building an even brighter future for the next generation of learners.
