DAVAO CITY —City Mayor Sebastian Duterte has expressed his support for ousted Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chairperson Maria Belen Acosta, who was replaced by Lao Magno on May 21.
Critics have condemned Malacañang for its lack of transparency and the confusion surrounding Acosta’s removal. The termination is seen as a troubling move that undermines the fundamental principles of fairness and due process.
“Secretary Acosta has served as a dedicated leader, embodying the spirit of public service and contributing significantly to the integrated development of Mindanao,” stated one prominent supporter. “Her record of good governance and exemplary public service in Davao City and Mindanao speaks for itself.”
“The blatant display of vindictiveness by the current administration is deeply troubling and disheartening, as it undermines fundamental principles of fairness and respect for due process. President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos’s sudden appointment of Mr. Leo Magno to a position that wasn’t vacant raises serious concerns about the transparency of decision-making and the treatment of dedicated public servants like Secretary Acosta,” Duterte added.
The mayor emphasized his solidarity with Secretary Mabel Acosta, supporting her pursuit of truth to address this unexpected termination. “It is crucial to protect the integrity and reputation of MinDA, ensuring that its operations continue smoothly and effectively. The people of Mindanao deserve leadership based on merit, transparency, and respect for the rule of law and the trustworthiness of our government institutions,” he stated.
He also called on his fellow public servants and the Filipino people to stand together in advocating for a system that honors and uplifts dedicated individuals like Secretary Acosta. “Let us actively work towards a culture that acknowledges their invaluable contributions, ensuring they receive the respect and support they rightly deserve. Let us not condone actions from higher authorities that undermine the integrity and dignity of public service,” Duterte urged.
Some have noted that Republic Act 9996 mentions a six-year term but does not specify the term as “fixed.” However, Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, in a letter on May 21, stated that Acosta was fired due to a “loss of trust and confidence.”
