DAVAO CITY —The provincial government of Davao Oriental is hopeful that the 50-megawatt solar power plant will be operational in October this year.

This is after Governor Niño Uy and King Shing Donny Yeung of DY Green Energy Corporation finalized the mechanism on April 25 at the Capitol.

Yeung assured the provincial government that the solar plant will start to distribute power to residents of the province by October 2024.

The ground preparation for the 40-hectare property Barangay Maputi in Banayabanay town is underway and if the land development and other agencies including the issuance of the business permit will continue the momentum, it is more likely that the project will be operational by October.

“We have granted the business permit for the company after they complied our requirements, the land was procured by the provincial government and everything from our end is completed,” said Banaybanay mayor Ian Larcia in an interview with Newsline.

Larcia throws support for the renewable energy project as it will benefit his constituents “We need a stable power supply not only for the residents but for the economic growth of our province, especially in my town,” he added.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 9, 2023.

The provincial government acquired the P12-million 40-hectare property and subsequently lease it to Dy Green Energy for fifteen years.

Yeung said that with this project, they are committed to providing a stable and cheaper electricity supply to the people of Davao Oriental, something that the province needs.

The P3-billion solar project is envisioned to provide a stable, cheap, and sustainable power supply to the residents of Davao Oriental. The power for the entire province has been reliant on Doreco (Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative), a cooperative and the sole power distributor but the supply is not stable given the volume of consumers.

Uy expects Yeung and his company to stand by its commitment as the provincial government is looking forward to its operation.

“The project will not only provide power supply but will perk up the investments and spur economic development in the province,” the Governor added.

As it is now, Uy revealed, at least seven investors want to pour capital into the province but they are constrained due to the unstable power supply.

In 2023, Uy and the DY Green Energy Corporation signed a Memorandum of Agreement which was attended by His Excellency Mr Hoang Huy Chung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Republic of the Philippines.

Dy Green Energy is expected to supply power to Doreco through a Power Supply Agreement.
