September 24, 2024 by NewsLine Philippines

DAVAO CITY –— Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco led the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Patikul, Sulu last Wednesday, September 18

“I am filled with gratitude to return and fulfill a promise—that under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration, no one will be left behind in our country’s development,” Secretary Frasco stated. She emphasized that the TRA aims to provide economic opportunities and bolster local aspirations for the island.

Strategically located near the Provincial Capitol, the new TRA will feature essential amenities such as restrooms, information desks, and a pasalubong center to showcase local products and craftsmanship.

“What sets Sulu apart is its unique ability to offer experiences unlike any other, from its rich traditions to the centuries-old artistry of Pis Siyabit weaving and the culinary heritage of the Tausug people,” Secretary Frasco explained, highlighting the area’s appeal to both local and international tourists.

Following her visit to Sulu in February, she expressed confidence in the province’s potential as a tourism destination, stating, “I believe Sulu will inspire other provinces in the Philippines.”

Partnership Formalized for TRA Construction

After the groundbreaking, Secretary Frasco signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the provincial government of Sulu, the Municipality of Patikul, and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) to formalize the partnership for the TRA’s construction.

“The establishment of this TRA demonstrates the Marcos administration’s commitment to support your province’s growth,” she noted, discussing tourism’s role in community upliftment and cultural exchange.

The MOA outlines the responsibilities of each party in constructing, managing, and maintaining the TRA, ensuring sustainability and effective operations in line with DOT guidelines. The signing was witnessed by local officials, including Governor Abdusakur Tan and Patikul Municipality Mayor Kabir Hayudini.

In respect to local customs, the TRA will include a Musalla, or prayer room, for Muslim visitors, as recommended by Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, who oversees the Department’s Halal Tourism initiatives. Additionally, the TRA will incorporate eco-friendly features like solar panels and a rainwater catchment system.

“I am confident that Sulu, under your leadership, will inspire other provinces,” Secretary Frasco told the local leaders present at the ceremony. She stressed the importance of tourism as a driving force for economic development.

Deputy Speaker Duke Frasco, who accompanied the Secretary, highlighted tourism’s potential for job creation and economic growth, reiterating the House of Representatives’ commitment to bolster the DOT’s budget for essential infrastructure.

Governor Tan remarked on how tourism infrastructure will enhance Sulu’s potential while preserving its rich cultural heritage. He expressed gratitude for ongoing support from the national government.

Vice Governor Toto Tan emphasized the DOT’s vital role in promoting peace in the province, stating, “The Department of Tourism has opened the window for the world to see the beauty of Sulu.”

The Sulu TRA will be the fifth in Mindanao and the 15th nationwide, contributing to the growing network of Tourist Rest Areas across the Philippines.

Celebrating Tausug Culture at Bangsa Sug Day

Prior to the TRA ceremony, Secretary Frasco attended the 643rd Bangsa Sug Day Anniversary in Maimbung, Sulu, where she praised the local textiles and creativity showcased during the Pis Siyabit fashion show.

In her remarks, she highlighted the DOT’s initiatives in promoting Halal tourism, which is increasingly significant in Sulu and nationwide. The DOT aims to expand Halal-certified dining options and make tourism more inclusive, including the launch of the Marhaba area for Muslim travelers and the first Halal Tourism and Trade Expo, SALAAM.

The Pis Siyabit fashion show featured local designers from Sulu’s 19 municipalities, each presenting three outfits that reflected the region’s rich cultural heritage. The event also included traditional performances, with Maimbung winning for its creative denim patchwork designs.

The celebration, themed “Fostering the Gagandilan Spirit of the Bangsa Sug towards a Brighter and Stronger Lupah Sug,” included sports competitions, a Grand Street Dance Competition, and a Dulang Competition, showcasing the vibrant culture of Sulu.
