Cagayan de Oro City (August 19) – The Department of Science and Technology Region 10 is urging the graduating Senior High School students to take the DOST scholarship program.

DOST region 10 chief Alfonso Alamban said that DOST will be offering scholarship for high school students, as long as they pass the scholarship exam.

Alamban added that there is no limit on available slots. “So long as they can pass the exam, DOST will take them in,” Alamban said.

Data from DOST region 10 showed that there are 407 scholars in the current year and 374 in 2017.  They are hoping that there will be more students that will avail of the scholarship and pass their examination.

DOST Scholarships coordinator Kirlyn Baconguis said that one of the benefits of being a scholar is a 20 thousand pesos tuition fee allowance per semester.

“So scholars who opt to study in private institution of higher learning will enjoy a 40 thousand pesos tuition fee allowance, if the school have trimester program, the 40 thousand will be divided into three,” Baconguis said.

Baconguis added that on top of the tuition allowance, scholars will get a monthly allowance of seven thousand pesos and a book allowance of P10,000 per year.

Alamban said that the 40 thousand tuition fee allowance may seem small for others, but if this is coupled with other scholarship grants, these will greatly help.

“If the student will enroll into State University or college, they will not get the 40 thousand, only the monthly and book allowance,” Alamban added.

The total scholarship grant could amount to 100 thousand pesos per student per year. Tertiary education in state universities and colleges are now free.

The DOST scholarship examination will take place on October 21, 2018 while deadline of submission of application form is on August 31, 2018.

Forms can be downloaded at Science Education Institute (WWW.SEI.DOST.GOV.PH) and it can be submitted to the nearest DOST regional or provincial offices or to the offices of congressman in their area.  Lance Baconguis/ NewsLine
